Crowns and bridges

A crown rebuilds a single damaged tooth. A bridge replaces one or more missing teeth. Both are fixed in place and made to blend with the rest of your smile.

A crown is a tooth-shaped cap, cemented permanently over a tooth to restore its strength, shape, size and appearance. A bridge uses the teeth or implants on either side of a gap as anchors to hold a replacement tooth in between. Together they cover most of what it takes to rebuild a compromised bite.

When a crown helps

Crowns do more than cover a tooth. They are used to reinforce and protect teeth that are weak, broken or cracked, and to finish other treatments cleanly.

  • Reinforce a weak, broken or cracked tooth
  • Support a large filling when little tooth remains
  • Anchor a bridge or cap a dental implant
  • Cover a discoloured or misshapen tooth

How a crown is made

The first visit prepares and shapes the tooth, takes impressions, and fits a temporary crown. The permanent crown is cemented at a second visit. With good hygiene a crown commonly lasts around five to eight years and often longer. Avoid nail biting, chewing ice and grinding to protect it.

Why replace a missing tooth with a bridge

A gap is not just cosmetic. Left open, neighbouring teeth drift into the space, which throws off the bite, makes cleaning harder and invites decay. A bridge restores chewing and speech and keeps the other teeth in line.

The bridge timeline

A bridge usually takes two or more visits, preparing the supporting teeth and fitting a temporary, then cementing the permanent bridge. Mild discomfort for a few days afterward is normal and over-the-counter pain relief is fine. Longevity depends on the materials, your hygiene, diet and the supporting teeth and gums.

Common questions

How long does a crown last?

Commonly around five to eight years, and longer with good hygiene. Avoiding ice, nail biting and grinding helps it last.

Does getting a bridge hurt?

Expect mild discomfort for a few days after the supporting teeth are prepared. Over-the-counter pain relief is usually enough.
